The Marriage of Science and Philanthropy

August 29, 2016

I consider myself to be more of a t-shirt and jeans kinda guy, but every once in a blue moon, I don't mind unleashing my inner Ray Donovan, especially for a good cause. Tonight I attended the Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry's 17th Annual "Match For Life" Gala.

This organization seeks to save lives by working with doctors, biologists, and volunteers, to build a registry of stem cell donors whose unique genetic make-up can help save the lives of Armenian and non-Armenian matches suffering from leukemia and other life-threatening blood related illnesses.

I enjoyed listening to the various board members speak, as they shared their personal experiences regarding how they contribute to the organization, and why they decided to offer their time and energy to the cause in the first place.

Having lived in L.A. all my life, it's easy, even for the best of us, to get wrapped up by our rat racey day-to-day, but attending this event was a great reminder, that regardless of who you are, where you live, what you do for a living or what your financial means are, we all have the ability, in one capacity or another, to help. Our nearest neighbors, as well as those on the other side of our world.

It's pretty awesome to think that an act that may be performed today, something like planting a tree or donating blood, dedicating yourself to a cause or starting an organization, can have a positive impact on our world, or even our next world, tomorrow, or the next month, or the next year.

The keyboard is my philanthropic medium (for the time being, anyway) and many of you may share that lifestyle with me, or may be living a very different reality involving very different things, but I think it's important that we try our best not to lose sight of what really matters, which is betterment.

For ourselves, for our friends and families, and for those that will continue the legacy of our species, long after we have left.
