First things first, RIP Mr. Gene Wilder. Willy Wonka's character is one of the most memorable characters from my childhood. His performance in that role was superb, and I feel as though that character, along with that movie, will be embraced for decades to come.
Southern Californians, mark your calendars. A new comic convention is coming to Los Angeles, January 14th and 15th of next year. The Comic Excitement Convention will be held at the L.A. Convention Center, celebrating comic books, cosplay, anime, horror, science fiction, aviation, and space exploration. Pop culture festivals in general are awesome, and a brand new one in Los Angeles is right up my alley. This one happens to have a pretty hefty $10K first place prize for its cosplay contest.
Halo 5 has a multiplayer map editor coming out on PC this September. And since Halo is my favorite video game ever, this calls for a celebration.
EW just released an exclusive trailer for what appears to be an indie or small budget sci-fi film named "Somnus" about the crew of an Earth-Mars freight vessel that runs into problems and diverts to a nearby asteroid colony named Somnus. Coming soon to select theatres, September 9th.
An additional RIP to the set worker that lost their life deconstructing a Blade Runner 2 set. It's real easy to forget that there are elements to film making that are quite dangerous, and I have a genuine appreciation for the hard-working folks that make one of my favorite things in life possible.
Kudos to the gentleman that built a record-setting Batman costume. (I have a hard time finding a decent Halloween costume to wear.) If you're in the mood for a good laugh, ask to see a photo of me from last Halloween, dressed as a Viking Warrior. Straight, lawlz...
Max Steel, Doctor Strange, and Justice League have all had info, images, or clips teased this passed week, and io9 has released several fall previews for films, books, TV shows, and comics.
One thing that I've personally found interesting is the duration or frequency in which Suicide Squad is coming to my mind. The soundtrack's radio play reminds me of the film, the images I see popping up here and there online are reminding me of the experience, and something tells me it might end up being the best sci fi film of the year. Guess we'll have to wait and see what Rogue One has to say about that.
That's it for this week's post. The State of Sci Fi will be brought to you on either Sundays or Mondays. I try to keep things as consistent as possible, in addition to keeping it real as often as possible. Sci Fi chat with ya'll later!
