Movie Review: Spectral

July 6, 2017

Being let down by a film is far more prevalent than being pleasantly surprised by one. Spectral was one of those rare cinematic gems that shined brighter than I ever expected it to.

I spent the 4th at home, nursing a cold and dog sitting while browsing Netflix for goodies. I watched S1:E1 of Voltron. That was cute. Easy, nostalgic fun. But before I did that, I watched Spectral, and it became one of my favorite military sci-fi stories ever, regardless of medium. (Halo will most likely always be my #1...)

I'll more often than not have gripes with a film. Indie, big-budget blockbuster, doesn't matter. But nothing really comes to mind when I try to consider major or even moderate issues with this movie.  I'm not a big fan of apples-to-oranges comparisons, anyway, so I won't go comparing it to a Disney production, but all things considered, Spectral simply kicks ass.

I enjoyed the dialogue, the characters, the vibe, the costumes, the weapons, the gorilla-esque, boston-dynamics-looking robots, the bad guy ghost creatures, the CG, I enjoyed it all! It's probably not going to get my nomination for best picture, but it's still relatively awesome! At the end of the day, I'm just glad I gave it a shot, because it worked out quite well.

Spectral reminded me of a few huge science fiction video games, like Crysis, Halo, and Gears of War, so if you're a fan of any of those games, or military sci-fi in general, put Spectral at the top of your to-do list.

Spectral is worth every minute, and a Netflix sci-fi poster child. More, Please!
